I want to swap the transmission out of my 1990 b2, it currently has the a4ld trans but what would be better and can fit the V6 2.9L. Or would it be better to rebuild the a4ld.

Other than manual trans there isn't another option to the a4ld unless you go to an older 3 speed - c5 or c4. The newer autos (e.g. 4r44e or 5r55e etc ) have more computer controls so would probably be in limp mode if you tried to use them. My suggestion is to get yours rebuilt.
But...I'm not a trans mech so there may be options I don't know about.

I had my A4LD rebuilt by AAMCO a couple years ago...err 3 years ago. Its been doing great. However, with some work I've been told you can install a C5 which would be the way I'd go if I had another A4LD failure...it was $2400 to have the transmission rebuilt which included all current updates and heavy duty parts what all that includes I have no idea I'm not a transmission guy but its been working great.

Do what you can with what you have where you are
I believe if I ever need to rebuild my A4LD transmission I would go with Jasper.

They're not all that great anymore :(. Their quality control went way downhill and they charge double what every other rebuilder wants. No issues with my 88 B2's A4LD after almost 3 years since it was rebuilt.
