Speedometer noise

Next issue to tackle - my speedometer has been making noise since I bought the car (86 BII), it seems to be coming right out of the middle of the dash, and is more of a grinding noise than a whine, which makes me believe that the issue may be in the speedometer itself rather than the cable. Any issues with unhooking the cable and driving it to verify it’s coming from the speedo and not the cable? I wouldn’t think there would be a problem.

No problem doing that. Also pretty simple to get the instrument cluster out if you need to replace the speedo
