The PO of my 84 Bronco II claimed that it had limited slip in the front and rear, and I'm trying to confirm this. I am also stumped by the axle code on the door. The axle code is D42. According to my Chilton manual; a D4 means limited slip with 3.73 gears, and 42 means regular with 3.45. It does not list D42. Am I missing something? It seems like it might have limited slip with 3.45 gears(a special order maybe). Is the tag on the front axle itself the only way to identify it?

The "D4" is the identifier for the 7.5" 3.73 Limited slip.

The additional "2" is the identifier on gen1's for the limited slip front axle.

You do indeed have a limited slip front.

the tag on the front is highly unlikely to be legible.

What should be inside is a Dana TracLok unit which is a
multi plate type limited slip. that doesn't use friction coated rings
it's steel-on-steel discs.

The diff in your back axle was originally a borg-warner "cone type"
and they have a well deserved reputation of exploding into shards
without much provocation

However most of them were replaced with "S-spring" type limited slips under warantee.

BTW, most vehicles equipped with a "2" code front axle
were also equipped with poly air bags inside the front coils
as part of a snow plow prep package.

And those that were wore a "supplementary capacity" label that was afixed to the drivers door, high on the door.
It's usually yellow.

Sadly the limited slip front axle died with some of the other interesting options the factory popup sunroof, the snow plow
prep, etc...

That's really interesting. Thanks for responding. I have been trying to find that bit of info for quite a while now.
