I have removed the 4.0 motor from a 1991 ford ranger, a transmission from a 1988 ford ranger and transfer case from 1987 ford bronco II and installed them in a 1987 ford bronco II. The problem is that the transmission is two inches further back than before. has anyone run into this before? I will have to get the drive shafts modified if I cant get the ones from the 1988 ranger.

Yes, the 88-up 5-speed transmission (FM146) is longer than 87-down (FM145). Driveshafts should be easy to find, the FM146 is the same length as the A4LD auto and M5OD 5speed. I would not recommend the FM146 behind a 4.0, it probably wont last long, the M5OD is a much better tranny.

There are exsisting holes in your frame rail for mounting the crossmember back 2" from where it is now.

the "change" on the 1899-up manual transmissions being longer were to make them the SAME as the 85-up A4LD already was.

In other words it was a change to make the driveshafts the same.

In other words you are just aboutmto discover that your rear driveshaft is 2" too long and your front driveshaft 2" too short.

You can get the proper length driveshafts off of any '88-up Bronco2
OR
an '86-up bronco2 with an A4LD (an '85 will have the wrong style U-joints)

Though it must be noted that 1990 bronco2's will have the large diameter flange
on the rear axle, and thus the wrong companion flange adapter.
