changed trans from A4LD to M5OD. won't start with key. Only way can get it to start is by putting a push button between the solenoid & the battery but, that in turn stays hot all the time & runs the battery down.
Also, can't get the transfer case linkage to work with this trans.
Anybody got any solutions?

You need to hook the wire FROM the neutral safety switch that goes to the computer to the hot wire coming from your ignition (It will start in gear) or install a clutch saftey switch. It tells the computer that the trans is disengaged and it's safe to start the engine.

I installed a clutch safety switch when I changed it over.

Make sure it's getting a connection. Was it new or used? Maybe it's bad.

Just a shout out: thanks for the diagram that fixed the problem. Got a new one, though. The starter doesn't work right,ie itgrinds a little before it starts the truck. It's a new starter that worked fine on the A4LD. Any suggestions?
I'm truly no professional but getting one for an M50D sounds like a plan, or even cheaper finding one in a j-yard.

Yeah it would probably be a good idea to cross reference the part numbers for the starter you have and what autozone or napa says you need.
