i blew the front output shaft apart on my transfer case, my transmission was garbage since the day i bought the truck and my engine is tired... soo im looking to do a complete swap from an explorer. my questions are whats gonna go into swapping the transfer case and tranny into my B2. is it the same transfer case? and what tranny should i be looking for? i have an automatic and i like it for wheelin, most people dont but i actually do. so i would like to keep it automatic but i wouldnt be totally against a manual. and while im at it i figured i should go ahead and do the 4.0 swap. soooo what should i be looking for to get all these? could i just buy one whole explorer and use all of its parts or should i get these from seperate vehicles.

thanks in advance

your best to get a complete explorer an swap over what you want. the explorer is going to have stronger componets.

Yeah, find an explorer, 91-94 or ranger 90-92 with a 4.0, and swap it all over.

Your t case is most likely a 1350, whereas the explorer will have a 1354.

I personally would go with a 5 speed, as the A4LD isn't the best of tranny's..but thats me.

There are tons of threads and stuff in the tech library on 4.0 swaps.

Personally I would find a 4.0 and a C4 with your choice of t-case. Dana 20 is a good one but there are others. You would lose your overdrive gear with the C4 but gain a lot in strength over the A4LD plus they are cheaper to rebuild.

may be a dumb question but is it possible to just get a 2 door explorer and swap bodys? IF its possible it would probably need some cab mount aligning..

The wheel wells won't line up...

You would have to do some "re-arranging"

The first gen 'Sploders had the A4LD. You want the overdrive. Really. Since the B2 is a lot lighter than the 'sploders, the A4LD ought to be a little better. And if you already have one in your B2, the ones in the 'Sploders area little beefier than early ones.

Now that I've had one apart and rebuilt it, I wouldn't hesitate to use one for a B2...

so there IS a difference between the ones in the B2 and the 'Sploders??? and how about the manual that comes in the explorer? will it hold up to a beating?

thanks

The manual will hold up to a beating, it's an M50D, it's a good tranny.

I wouldn't trust even a rebuilt A4LD, especially if your wheeling it. But thats me...

The C4 is your best option for strength if you want an automatic. 90% of the folks here will tell you that the A4LD is crap or at least not ideal for a wheelin rig. The C4 also gives you the option of choosing from better transfer cases.

If this is a wheelin rig, there is no need for overdrive.

Except you can't get a torque converter for a C4/C5 that will have a low enough stall to use behind a 4.0 on the street. If it's off road only, you could probably put up with it.

Besides the wheel base the frames are completely different from the cowl back...

i drive this truck everyday as well. dont get me wrong i wheel it but its definitly not an offroad only. so what are my best options automatic wise? my bro had an automatic that was on the floor behind his 5.0l swapped ford ranger. im not worried about having overdrive but the whole torque converter thing seems like it might suck.

so will the tranny t-case engine all bolt up under my B2 out of a sploder?, its an 89. that seems to be my best bet, and this one i can get for $400 has a manual already so i can do the manual swap into mine for now.

If you can find an explorer with a good A4LD, use that. They are stronger than your 2.9 A4LD, but they still bring the suck. That or ponying up about 2 grand for adapters to run a GM 700R4 trans are your overdrive auto 4.0L options.
