Newer (2001) 4.0 swap?

I've been reading alot about the 4.0 swap. I haven't seen any with a newer 4.0. Would it be all the same? I have a 1989 Bronco II automatic 2.9 and the donor is a 2001 Explorer Sport Automatic 4x4. Also would my 2.9 transmission work just until I get the 4.0 trans rebuilt? ( has no reverse). Thank you in advance for any information.
