The transfer case.

It shifts the case between 2hi, 4hi, and 4lo. There is no neutral.

In some of my last posts I have stated that when I let off the gas sometimes I hear a loud whine and if I push down on the gas I get a clunk, and the whine goes away. Would this thing cause that??? and is there a gear on it that could be worn out??? If so I do know I can get one of the transfer case motors local, but what getting about the gear??? Thanks

the whining and clunking has nothing to do with the tcase shift motor, and likely has nothing to do with the tcase, unless it happens while in 4hi or 4lo. I'm with D-day, the noises are likely driveline related, check your fluid levels, u-joints, and wheel bearings. sloppy u-joints will clank with any change in driveshaft speed(when you get on and off of the pedal) and the whining could either be a side effect of the u-joint, low fluid levels in the diff, trans, or tcase, or an early warning of a bearing failure.
