does a automatic transmission out of a 2.9 fit a 4.0 and work?

Yes but I would not recommend putting an already weak A4LD behind a much stouter engine...

Yes, it will work fine. I put a 4.0 in my 88 Bronco II and kept the Bronco II's original transmission. I haven't had any problems so far. Keep in mind I do not use my Bronco for offroading or towing. If you are planning on using your vehicle for that I would recommend a heavier duty transmission.

It may work but I wouldn't reccommend it...I killed four of them and all without driving really crazy. Always changed my fluid too. If your'e trying to save money go for it, just be prepared for the next step when it dies.
