I have a 1984 bronco 2 4x4 with a 2.8. It has a bad transmission and I was wondering if I can replace my trans with a 2.9 2 wheel drive manual trans? Will I be able to bolt the 2.8 transfer case to the 2.9 trans? Thanks for all the imput. prerunnerrunner:dntknw:

They share the same bolt pattern, but the input shafts are different. One has the pilot bearing in the end of the crank, and the other has it in the flywheel. I believe the flywheels interchange, so it shouldn't be too hard.

You cannot use a 2WD transmission on a 4WD truck. Well you can, but the effort required is not worth it. Find a 4WD trans. Anything from behind a 2.8, 2.9 or 4.0 will bolt up.

Sure you can, with little effort aside from a driveshaft. If you want a 2WD truck.

The possibility of bolting the transfer case ought to be obvious if you have looked at one of these transmissions....forget it.

You cannot have a dummy t-case on a 2wd trans either. If it has a dummy case bolted to it, then it's a 4wd trans.

Something else that might present an issue though, a 2.9l manual trans newer than 1987 will be longer than your '84 trans, requiring you to modify/replace your driveshafts.
