The amount if frustration is frustrating. Set it tdc again, put dizzy back and still only get backfiring, makes me wanna cry lol. I hope I didn't mess shit up with changing the timing set :(

Sounds like she is firing late still. I would take allot he plug wires and rotate them all one tower clock wise and see what that does. Do remember that's what 85 ranger had to do running the explorer FEAD (if I remember right).

Forgot to clearance the power steering/ ac compressor bracket so I removed it and went to town.
This is with a little grinding.

Put it on and it wasn't enough so took a bit more off.

Anyone know how much of the rounded part that holds one of the idler pulleys I can take off and it still be safe? If I take some more off the back of the round part i looks like I can get more room for proper dizzy placement and timing.

If it's just off a hair or so and you can't turn it enough then move all the wires one tower over.

Am I wrong in thinking that bit doesn't matter as much where the rotor is pointed, as long as the engine is at TDC when its set and you use what ever plug tower the rotor points too as the number one plug wire?

Correct. Any tower can be plug number one, you don't have to use the number 1 that is on the cap. As long as you know which is number one, the direction of the rotation off the rotor and the firing order, it is literally as fast as you can put the wires on in order they belong on the cap and plugs.

Best I can say is recheck everything from the coil to the spark plugs.

I don't think you can fit an HEI dizzy on your engine with your FEAD you have, but I'm not sure of the clearances.

I wish there was :(. I am completely stumped as to why it won't start. I've put the engine to TDC at least a dozen times, and used both firing orders and I get nothing, and to add to that I lost spark from the dizzy the last time I messed with it. I have rechecked all my wiring, swapped out the dspark box and I still get nothing. I don't know what to do.

Get out your test light and start checking your power going back from the dizzy. Where the pigtail plugs into the dizzy, where the pigtail plugs into the duraspark box, where the duraspark box gets its various powers... just gotta go down the line and figure out who isn't pulling their weight.

And then once you get constant fire you only have to figure out why it doesn't want to start. :icon_thumby:

Random thought, what is the neutral start switch situation? Being an automatic if you are cranking with the remote cranking trigger on the soleloid it might just be turning the starter...

If you can wait a little while I could run up and try to help figure it out some weekend. This weekend is supposed to be nice but I have a bunch of things to do that I have been putting off because of the bitter cold.

I have another DS dizzy set up for a flat tappet cam, I have no idea if it is any good but we could try it too.

Sounds like a bad dizzy. I sure wish I knew if an hei dizzy could fit in there with the explorer FEAD.

Do be careful about using a flat tappet on a roller cam.

It has a manual in it, would that have a NSS? If your willing to poke at it with me that would be cool as I am stumped lol.

Danger, I wish I had a HEI to test fit.

IIRC it is a '80 block which is pretty well entrenched into the flat tappet era. My dizzy came on a '78 302.

If it is just the dizzy being bad the HEI wouldn't be much of an improvement, still gotta buy a dizzy and rewire the whole thing vs a in theory plug and play DS.

Wasn't the truck originally an automatic though? The A4LD for sure had a NSS, and your truck will still be looking for it to be in neutral unless you have eliminated it by closing the connection.

The wire that ran yhe coil on the factory setup is what you would hook to the hei coil.

It was an auto, where is the NSS and how would I trick it?

It went to the driver side of the transmission originally, mine hung about straight down from the firewall with nothing in the enigne bay.

It will take forever to load here at work to link a pic but if you go through my build thread right after I got the 2.8/A4LD pulled you can see the connector hanging down on top of the radius arm crossmember.
