Had the same problem with my 85 put the right bolts in and straitened the motor plate been going about a month now with no problems at all. I think the combo of both made the difference I would deff check the motor plate.

my plate is messed up. the hole is oblong from having the smaller bolts in it. I noticed that last weekend when everything was apart.

I just pulled my starter again expecting to see the "bendix" showing signs of contact with the ring gear....nope. It seems that the "bendix" bushing is slightly too large for the starter shaft. It's causing the noise I'm hearing.

i ahve had the grinding problem too. What I have found is using a escort 1.9 starter drive. It is 10 tooth compared to 9 tooth on our starters. My starters grinded. The larger drive is like 10 thousands bigger. It has worked on all my trucks. Hope this helps!!

Has anyone tapped the threads on the engine to a different size due to the original threads being stripped? If so, what's the trick, there's not enough room to spin the tap.

I have used a 1/4" drive and either 12 point or 8 point socket to drive the tap in close quarters. Be very careful, as it's much easier to break the tap with the extra torque developed by the handle length and the possibility of being slightly off of straight in.
Good luck,

Richard

Thanks, may have to try that. Just called local shop for the heck of it and he says $150 to do the job, I was looking at it, and looks like if I use your method, take the starter out first of course, I probably could do it.

Thanks.

I was just re-thinking my previous post, I might try a 3/8" drive ratchet because of the size. Or maybe try a ratcheting wrench...... Ah, hell I'd just use whatever works in the situation :icon_twisted:

Haha, well anything would be better than the $150 bill to have a shop spend like a half hour to do this task. The shop tried telling me it would take him an hour just to remove the starter, I just laughed at him, I've taken the starter in and out so many times lately due to the stripped mounting hole problem that I can do it in about 10 minutes now LOL. Anyhow I'll try and get to this sometime this week, I miss having my B2 as my daily driver, far cheaper on fuel than my truck.

I thought about doing a thread repair kit, but from what I've read they aren't exactly a permanent fix, and sometimes will fail, so I figured I may as well just re-tap the hole and use the next size larger bolt.

As long as the next size larger fits....
I like thread repair especially in aluminum as now the torque/pressure is steel on steel, similar to using a stud. I haven't done a lot of thread repair so can't comment on durability issues but if ford fixes their sparkplug holes with it then it should hold elsewhere with no problems.

Well either way I have to tap the threads even to do a thread repair kit from what I can find information about. I just don't want to end up screwing this thing up and not being able to use the vehicle at all. Right now I can start it, but for how long with just the one bolt tight before it breaks free.

Are you trying to use a t-handle with the tap?? If so, that's the problem.

What set do I need, and where do I find one? I haven't got a repair kit yet, been kind of trying to find out my best option. Right now the bolt size is the factory 3/8-16 x 1-7/8".

A tap and die set will always come with a tap adapter. These can be driven with a ratchet. They tighten around the tap and then have a square hole your ratchet or extension will go in to drive them. Remember, use lubricant, every full turn, go 1/4 turn back to remove the chips, then proceed.

I hate to use an Erastwood pic . . but you see two adapters in the picture. . . . . just in case you didn't know what I was talking about.

Crap, guess I'll have to figure something out because my grandfather's 40+ year old craftsman tap/die set doesn't have those adapters. I guess I will look around. Thanks.

This old set doesn't have any figures, if I didn't have bad luck I wouldn't have any at all. Looks like another week or 2 of driving my truck while the B2 sits in the driveway un-driveable once again. The one day off from work thing is getting really old, and that day being Sundays I can't get a damn thing done thanks to every place I need to go being closed LOL. Oh well, some day maybe.

Weird that's similar to my grandfather's set, missing that adapter though, well my grandfather's set didn't come with one to begin with. Bidding on it. Thanks. May just see about using a socket and ratchet to get this done, kind of pointless having a vehicle if I can't drive it.
