Finally got to take her out today, but of course now I am having tranny issues. It drives just fine, but if I try to engine brake down a hill it almost acts like its in neutral and grinds really bad. Oh well its the last thing on her thats stock. Time for it to go.

Poser shot from today.

He has a 5spd...a c5 or c4 would be good, but you lose od...you can use a gen 2 a4ld (91-94). If you want build the ultimate, you can combine 5r55e internals with the a4ld case...

I have contemplated going auto. If it was trail only it would be a no brainer, but since its a DD I still like a stick. I am getting 5r55e from a buddy that needs rebuilt. May do something with that.

i thought of keeping the auto in the explorer. but it had more con's than pro's for me. one of the biggest is it allways seemed to be in to low of a gear. crusing down back roads at 25-30 i would be turning around 3000 rpm's which chugged down the gas. the second was i hated rocking it between reverse and drive just seemed no good. and third was i slid off a bank backing up and the trans must not have been able to get fluid cuz it felt like it droped into neutral and wouldnt go until i winched myself out and got onto somwhat flat ground (fluid was full).

Now i know all of these ailments can be cured by building it, but i wasnt looking forward to droping several thousand into the trans when i was more than happy with the stick. but that's just me.

Dustin I spotted a 4x4 tk5 at ypp yesterday.

Anddd..... I'm pulling the a4ld out of my expo this week, it's been rebuilt with a shift kit and deep aluminum pan. It may have more in it but I'd have to ask the PO.

Complete, think it just came in the other day. I'm not sure but I'm thinking $50-$70.

Thats a possibility. Out of curiosity what would you want for the a4ld, flex, and TC? I still haven't decided what direction I am going to go.

Was hoping to squeeze about $200 out of the complete setup, but it may not bring it.

Finally found Katie an Explorer. Paid a whopping $650. Its a 96 and needs a transfer case. Seller told me it was stuck in 4low so I was hoping it was just the shift motor. Drove it to the gas station and pulled it off, but when its in 2 or 4 hi it just grinds. So I drove 2 hours home in 4 low.

That's a good find Dustin. I should start looking on craiglist.
