I did this to my 84 B2 just to add some flare. I did this out of bordom so don't flame me too much. I used duct tape, and some flat black spray paint i had lying around (sprayed into a little cup) and a brush. Basically made sure it was taped real good and brushed it on so it's not the greatest but from 5' it looks good.

Not bad looking... Might do something like this if the covers i wanted to get stick out too much and look out of place. lol

Any1 have any ideas how you could make it look better and last longer?

I like it!!

I wonder if you sprayed some clearcoat over it if it would be more resiliant? Or maybe even cover them in that clear 300m protective film stuff?

I did the same thing on my 89 Ranger about 12 years ago. I sanded the entire taillight, painted it with color match paint, and cleared the whole thing. It was still holding up good about 2 years ago when I got rid of the truck.

I think i will actually do that over getting the covers. Everytime i look back at that picture it looks better lol.

So do do this the best to make it last and look good... What would need to be done? Any specific type of paint/coats/etc?

use krylon fusion spray paint (for plastic)

when i prep for fusion paint, i just wash the part real well, then wipe it down with a rag and a little rubbing alcohol. several thin coats, and your done.

btw, i really like the look of this. much better than covers or that "nightshade" stuff since it doesn't block the taillight

Interesting... Ive seen some trucks with lights already like that at the junk yard so i wonder if other folks did this or was it a possible factory trim? I'd like to do this to mine, but tail lights dont last long after a weekend of wheelin. Looks good tho:icon_thumby:

i did the same thing to mine a while back, but i also smoked the lenses lightly. just clean th light real good first then rough it up a little bit with some fine scotch brite. then rubbing alcohol to remove the dust and use blue painters tape where you want to keep the red. for the smoke i used testors model paint in the transparent black. its used to do window tint on models and r/c cars. then 3-4 coats of a good clear and they come out great
