motor swap

i got a 90 bronco 2 with a m5od, its 4x2 without the dummy transfer case. the 2.9 its connected to is toast. what would be the best year donor exploder to get? i would like to keep the m5od.

I read that you can use any ohv motor as it is the same block....is this correct, or would I have to use the 91-92 motor? thanks

95+ motors have the better heads, but you will have change some electronics in the intake...

2.9 for now
if you can find the elusive 1990 ford ranger with a 4.0 it will be a direct bolt in with no wire splicing fabrication or drama... just another option...
