so my friend bought a 92 ford exploder 2dr, with a auto.

it has a new rad, thermostat, fan clutch, hoses. when he drives it is gets hot and boils out of the return tank only. i mean it acts like you pop the cap on the rad. it doesnt over flow out of anywere else.

any ideas on what could cause this?

I believe there are two radiator caps; one on the radiator and one on the reservior. Try replacing the cap on the radiator. If a radiator cap fails to hold pressure it will allow the coolant to boil over.

2 radiator caps? Where did you get this from? The reservoir cap is nothing but something to keep dirt out of the overflow tank.

I agree, it sounds like a head gasket. However, it could also be a water pump.

Typically if a water pump isn't leaking it isn't the problem.
(Think horses not Zebras)

Though I've seen atleast one Cologne water pump that had the
vanes corroded off the impeller... (Zebra, not a horse)

You can buy chemical test strips that you can dip into the engine coolant
that react to the presence of combustion products in the coolant.

That is an absolute indication of a problem.

BTW, when you said "New Rad" was it really a NEW rad or a "Junkyard new"
(New to the vehicle) radiator?

Do you know that for sure? Have you had an oil analysis done on it?
no i didnt, but theres no milky white, nothing was wrong with the fluid when we changed it. when its just warm and you take the cap off the retrun res over flows. tighten the cap and it stays fine

Are you sure the thermostat was installed correctly and works, my buddy had a car doing the same thing would over flow out the reservoir. After going over everything found out the ''mechanic'' he took the car too never put a thermostat in at all:annoyed:, after we fixed that it ran like a champ.
