I have an 89 bronco 2 and its the 2.9l engine with the manual trans. my battery was dead so I asked my brother for a jump, he hooked my positive to his negative and my negative to his positive and sparks started flyin and my battery started smoking. we took the cables off and let them sit for a little bit to cool off. after that we hooked them up right and charged my battery up and I tried to start it, and it wouldn't start. before this happened it would start fine but when I tried to start it, it wouldn't click or turn over at all and sounded like the starter wasn't engaging to me, so what do ya'll think it is? im gonna get a new starter and see what happens but until then, whats your thoughts? thanks for the help

Any number of things could have been damaged, particularly the electronics.

Get the engine spinning with the starter and then check for spark and fuel and such.

You said you think you have a starter problem now. I assume that means that when you push the key to "Start" the engine does not turn. Fix that first.
