what is the standard size tire for a 86 B2 4x4?

I just got my b2 not long ago and the previous owner has 225/70/r15's on it. I was just wondering if these tires are too small for this truck? I know the tire size is on the sticker in the door but my truck doesnt have the original doors. I feel they mighy be too small because at 55 mph im running 2,000 rpms that just seems a little high but i might be wrong. Anyone else know what their rpms are at 55 mph? Thanks for any help.

They were probably 235 75 15. That's what most of em were. May have been 215 75 15

I know at least for the '84's, the standard was 195-75/15. I had the upgraded 205-70/15, required the outside tire mount. Very popular even then for owners to go even larger.

50 MPH_________ Drive 2600 RPM
O/D 2200 RPM

65 MPH__________Drive 3300 RPM
O/D 2600 RPM


Normal driving, shifts are between 2400 and 2900 RPM

Does not seem to make power till about 2400/2500 RPM

This is just what I have seen while driving. Speed will be off some with the larger tires.

Sticker on the door says 205/75/15. When I got it it had 215/75/15's which I think was an optional tire size. Put a set of 225/70/15's on it and made no difference in speedometer readings.

The original '88 Sales Brochure lists stock as 195/75-15 with larger sizes available and lists the Eddie Bauer edition as having 205/75-15 standard.

If anything, those are bigger than what it came off the line with. 195, and 205 were the common sizes. A lot of people went up to 215s.

2,000 and 55 sounds about right to me. I run 215s on my B2 and that's where I sit at 55. My Ranger is a bit lower, but it has a different overdrive gear than factory.

My '86 BII owners manual says 205-75/15 for tire size and that is what I had on mine when I got it. I put '92 explorer wheels on it with 225-70/15's and I liked the new stance & feel. My '88 BII has 235-75/15's but I prefer the 225-70's.

Wow i couldnt imagine my B2 with smaller tires. They just seemed a little small for a 4wd but i guess im crazy. I was hoping i could get a nice 31 inch tire and still keep my 2000 rpms at 55 mph which is 22mpg for me but by the earlier comments im lucky to be getting that with the tires i got :icon_twisted:

I've alwatys put 235/75-if's on RBV's but this tire size wasn't factory equipment until 1993.

Stock tire size on bronco2's was never larger than 205/75-15's
Both of my 1987's and my brother's '88 had 205/75's.

my 1986 came stock with 195/75-15's that I swapped off first day I had it.

225/70's actually sound like an intelligent upgrade size.

I get what you mean but like with my granddad's 89 f150 4x4 we put smaller street tires on it thinking it would get better mileage but in fact the tires were smaller than recommended and because the tires were smaller than call for it caused the truck to have a higher rpm rating because the gears would spin the smaller tires around faster which caused it to actually get worse gas mileage. I was hoping that the tires on my truck were too small and that was why my rpms were higher when driving 55-60 mph. I was hoping if the factory size was about a 31 inch tire then it would drop my rpms down a few hundred and save myself some gas. As pointed out on the replies above I was mistaken and the original tire size is actually smaller than what I got, so yes if I put a larger tire on I cant expect to keep the same rpms/mpg.

on the 88 xlt it's 195 75 15

B2 tires

My 84' door sticker says 205/75 as well. I just took off a set of 31's and put my 235/75's back on. The larger tires killed my driveability. 1st gear was too high, 2nd was too low for around town, 3rd too high for around town, 4th was good for the highway and 5th was almost unusable except over 60mph. That's with 3.78 rears and a fresh 2.8. There's just not enough hp to turn those big donuts. The 235's are as big as I want to go with this truck.

My 84 B2 has the 235/75-15's right now, and looking to find a set of tires new or used at this point for a reasonable price around the Boise Idaho area but looking to go back to the standard 205/75-15's but seems like everything is outrageously priced.

wildbill i wish you lived closer to me over here in chelan i have a set on my b2 thats just sitting there that i would let you have for a small price of 75 with about 65-70% tread and some stock looking aftermarket wheels.

Thanks, but by the time I make the drive it wouldn't help out LOL. I parked the Bronco till the snow is gone I can't keep it on the road at all even with 4WD the lack of traction just lets it slide wherever it feels like. I appreciate the offer though.
