Because the A4LD is a sore subject around here.... but .... I never had issues with the one in my 91 explorer ..... it was my 92 that had transmission issues. find a M5ODr1 to swap in.

Im running the A$LD in my 94 and I havent has any issues with it either. I do have the HD cooling for it though and don't necessarily beat on it. And yes it gets wheeled......HARD

Personally, I avoid talking about auto trans issues because to go beyond the statement that "The A4LD, in the most technical of terms sucks sweaty, salty monkey balls," there are just too many potential failure points in an automatic transmission for me to even attempt to diagnose one over the internet. I have enough problems doing that in person, not even gonna try it over a forum when I'm not even remotely sure of the other person's skill level, which, if it's high enough to do what I need them to do to make even an educated guess at the problem, they can probably figure it out for themselves.
Plus the best answer is usually to just replace the sucker with a manny anyway.

If you check other RBV forums you will find the same attitude.
Most A4LD's are junk, but ever so often you will run into one that is super.
The fastest killer of any automatic transmission is heat, next is lack of maintenance.
A4LD's have another problem that deals with the alignment between the center of the crankshaft and the center of the front pump, that means premature front seal life and loss of fluid, good bye transmission.

It all makes so much sense now.
France = Sucks balls.
I do try to help people, any way I can here. There are just some things too complex to help someone with over the internet if they don't already have a certain skill level with that part of the vehicle. In the case of any automatic, not just the A4LD, that necessary level of skill is so high that if what I can do online to help you, beyond just posting the diagnostic tests from the manual, is in your skill range, you probably don't need the help of a guy who just scrapped through auto trans class because they are just too complicated.

all A4LDs are not equal some improvements were made EX. some came with thrust bearings instead of washers in a few areas. also some have misaligned parts. quality control was not what it should have been. If rebuilt by someone who was a tranny specialist at a ford dealer during the late eighties early nineties you might have a chance at a "good" service life
