Ive got a 89 BII stock 373 gears with 31x10.50x15 wildcats 2.9L and a 5spd. I think i drive it pretty easy but im always curious as to how others drive their rigs. What RPM's are you shifting at (freeway and in town)?

97 Explorer, 4.0 OHV, M5OD 5 speed, 3.73s, 2wd, OEM sized tires (235/70/15 IIRC)

I shift usually just a crack over 2K RPM (2000/2300) if in traffic, I'll shift at 1800/1900 if I'm being lazy/slow.

my boring 2.9 doesn't really wake up until about 2300, so i usually wait to shift until about 3 or maybe a tick over.

ditto there. I swapped a '87 2.9 TB into my '88 BII 5-spd 4X4and it made a big difference on the power and taking off and passing sectors. now to jack up timing to 12TDC from the stock 10TDC and see what itll do. but it is usung more petrol Ive noticed but what the h---,,gas is down to 3.10 gal here now and hope it stays down due to Gadaffy out of power.:yahoo::headbang::icon_cheers:

2.9L, M5OD (2.9L wide-ratio), 35" tires, 5.13 gears...
I usually shift somewhere around 3K in routine driving, maybe around 3500-3700 if accelerating a little harder (but not all-out hard, then it's at 5K lol).

3.73s w/31x10.50 tires is gonna blunt a 2.9's performance a good bit though, ideally you'd want 4.56 with those tires.

Nice picture of your rig. wish mine was that active,,just stock set-up now,,nuttin extreme like yours. but do have fun with it the way it is. may get more aggressive set-up as time goes by and find the parts locally at the j/y's.:icon_thumby::icon_cheers:. thanks for sharing..Larry

Um I have pinned my tach at 6k multiple times via wheeling racing and just general screwing around was even at one point trying to blow the motor so I had a reasonable enough excuse to put a 4liter in but it still runs and drives(but its a fwd b2) right now but normally I shift in the 3-4k range

2.9 don't actually red lines but they run out of air just above 6k and will have no problems staying there all day. I normally shifted 4-5k when getting on it and 3-4k for normal driving.

Redline on the tach is 5500. There is debate whether they have a rev limiter and what it's set at but I know I hit 6200 a few times with mine.

Awww about whenever I get around to it. I live in a hilly area so I tend to wind her out a fair bit. Usually, just puttin' around, around 2500 to 3000 rpm. If I'm chasing/passing/scaring someone (or late for work) I'll wind her out to 5 grand on every shift :)

Still wish I had finished my 4.0 swap. Me and gf broke up and I moved into an apartment so I lost access to her dad's tools and my driveway "garage"...dangit.

i never hit 6k on my 2.9.. but it was an auto trans lol...
i still say you don't need a "good" reason for the 4.0 swap other than ITS AN AWESOME MOTOR AND REALLY WAKES UP A B2

I try to keep the left hand needle between 25 and 3000. Dang hard with my gearing and the speed limits around here.

Usually too busy keeping my eyes on the road to worry about revs. I shift when its time to shift. But don't listen to me, i only use 3 gears in dd conditions.....
